Dedicated to the memory of Sheila Somers

This site is a tribute to Sheila Somers, who was born on August 23, 1926. She is much loved and will always be remembered.

Sheila was born on 23 August 1926 in Finchley, North London. Her parents were George Leslie and Dorothy May Hammond. She had a younger brother, Brian, who predeceased her.

Sheila was educated at The Henrietta Barnett School and then at Pitman College where she trained as a shorthand secretary. Her first job was at the Medical Research Council.  She was athletic and particularly enjoyed badminton. She was also an accomplished pianist.

In 1948 she married Lawrence Richard David Somers (Dick) and subsequently had two daughters, Carol Ann and Lynn Dorothy. Much of her married life was spent in Bristol, a city she loved. In 1967, the family moved to Goring on Thames so that Dick could take up a position in London. Sadly, Dick died in 1970 at the age of forty-seven.

Following Dick’s death, Sheila moved back to Bristol and took up work again. Among other posts, she worked at the Royal West of England Academy and the University of Bristol, Architecture department and Vet school.

She retired to Burnham on Sea in Somerset. She loved her garden and was an active gardener up to the week of her death.

In her later years, Sheila lived with Lynn, first in Cheddar and then in Plymouth.

Up to her death, Sheila was a member of the Labour Party. She was always passionate about social justice and she despised pretentiousness and dishonesty. Her preferred reading was Private Eye!

On 19th August, Sheila suffered a catastrophic stroke. She died on 26th August at home with her daughters and will be very greatly missed.

Sheila, who had been a very loving and supportive mother and grandmother, leaves behind her two daughters, five grandchildren, Harriet, Richard, Eleanor, Jonathan and Oliver and three great grandchildren, Emily, William and Tobin.

During the last week of her life, the nurses from St Luke’s Hospice attended Sheila several times a day with care and compassion. The family is extremely grateful for this support.

Sheila did not want a funeral.
